Firm, Medium and Plush describe surface feel. On their own, they do not tell you how a mattress supports your body. Feel is how you go to sleep. Support is how you wake up.
The calibrated feel layers and support core are designed to work together. We select and configure the materials above the core to complement the complete mattress, rather than treating softness or firmness as the starting point.

Why feel can be misleading
Surface feel is an immediate, subjective preference. Support is an objective engineering function. A five-minute showroom test only reveals surface softness, not how a bed supports your posture over several hours. That’s why Support First™ makes support architecture, specifications and care transparent, so you can choose with confidence, even online.
Feel is the surface sensation you notice in the first few minutes, in-store: Firm, Medium or Plush. Support is judged over months and years of nightly use, holding your alignment the whole time.
Support is what determines spinal alignment, pressure relief and how much a partner’s movement disturbs your side of the bed, night after night, for as long as you own the mattress.
Firm, Medium and Plush describe a personal preference layered on top. Support is the engineered coil system underneath: the part that decides whether the mattress is still doing its job years from now.

Lasting comfort isn’t a surface label. It’s the engineered support system holding you, plus a sleep surface that stays fresh: breathable spring cores, quality of mattress fabric and an approved base that protects ventilation.

The support systems
Two of these are comfort materials that shape how a mattress feels. The other five are engineered support systems that hold your spine. A mattress made primarily from comfort materials does not automatically provide the same structural support as a named spring system.

A comfort-layer material: it shapes surface feel, not the structural core.
Foam shapes how a mattress feels at the surface: cushioning, contouring and the initial softness you notice first. On its own it is not an engineered support system. A mattress built primarily from comfort materials does not automatically provide the same structural support as a named spring system.

Why we don’t recommend foam or fibre as a core: they make good comfort layers, but as a support core they compress under pressure, retain heat and fatigue faster than a spring system.
Ratings are an internal assessment, not independently verified. A qualitative comparison of support-system design, assuming comparable mattress quality. Comfort layers, materials and overall construction also influence real-world performance. “Recommended” reflects the Support-First philosophy, not a judgement of any individual mattress.
So what actually changes over time?
The surface materials in every mattress naturally settle and respond to years of use. But when a mattress begins to feel genuinely uncomfortable, the question isn’t simply whether it still feels Firm, Medium or Plush. The more important question is whether the structure underneath is still doing its job.
